Ella Littwitz
Salt
Sala 1 – Centro internazionale d’arte contemporanea, Rome, Italy
Nov 4, 2026 – Jan 15, 2027
Opening: Nov 4, from 6pm
Sala 1 presents Salt, Ella Littwitz’s first solo exhibition in Rome, curated by Micol Di Veroli. For over fifteen years, the artist has investigated the ways in which landscape becomes territory: how land is traversed by histories, beliefs, memories, and systems of belonging that ultimately overlap with its physical reality.
At the heart of Salt is the landscape of the Dead Sea and Mount Sodom, a place where geology, myth, religion, and history coexist within layers that are both material and symbolic. Salt becomes the starting point for this reflection. A profoundly ambivalent substance, it preserves and corrodes, endures and dissolves, protects from decay while simultaneously transforming everything it comes into contact with. In Littwitz’s practice, matter is never static: it changes state, reacts, retains traces of what has occurred and, at the same time, generates new forms.
Salt thus unfolds within the tension between two temporalities: a human temporality that seeks to order the world, preserve its traces, and lend stability to its narratives, and the temporality of matter, which continues to transform independently of the categories through which we attempt to understand it. The exhibition will show sculpture, works on paper, and a sound installation.
